Maya Angelou

The greatest masters often lead the way for those that follow. It is an honor to be notated as a Master of your craft. Most often many students look for a guide to model their personal trek to seek perfection and become the best at what they do. However, to look at those prospects also offer life lessons and inspirational moments that often help propel the student, offering great ambition. To become a master takes time, effort, focus, and dedication.

Maya Angelou is my chosen master mentor! I was inspired by her the very first time I heard her voice. There was strength, confidence, boldness, and intelligence that resided with her vocal expression. I identify with Maya Angelou more than any other being. I believe we have similar crafts and share similar life experiences. She has always been a peculiar individual, and her journey to success and mastery shows that. In this paper, I will reveal Maya's creative task, strategies, and breakthrough according to the text, Mastery, by Robert Greene. We will see how Maya ‘s childhood reflects and ties into the journey as well as her ability to cope, triumph and travail through many unforeseen tribulations that arose. I will compare Maya's journey with that of John Coltrane's and see how the two correlate, if at all.

Maya Angelou was born into the world as Marguerite Johnson was a renown author, poet, director, civil rights activist, scriptwriter, educator, actress, singer dancer and much more. She got the nickname Maya from one of her older brothers. As a child, she experienced a very traumatic encounter. She was raped at the age of seven by her mother's boyfriend. Shortly after, she moved in with her father's mother. Her rapist was convicted and sentenced. However, he was released and later found dead. Maya thought because she had spoken his name to her grandfather that her voice killed him, so she stopped communicating verbally for five years. This would be the catalyst towards a reflection of what we know as her most significant works of literature. I believe Maya's memoirs were the beginning of her creative task. She had become obsessed with a way to communicate her childhood thoughts, experiences, and emotions. The first book to establish her voice was ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.'  It was published in 1969 when she was 41 years of age and became the 1st nonfiction bestseller by an African America woman. In this memoir, she told her childhood story, so it was realistic, and Maya had gained enough knowledge, wisdom, and skill set within her craft of writing to pull this off. This book has now become one of the greatest in American Literature. It is already a bold and courageous move to tell of one's traumatic experience such as rape. Maya took advantage of the opportunity, and it became the spark of many more great memoirs.

As far as her creative strategies Maya had what seemed to be a great ability even in her younger years. During those five years of silence, she read as many books as she could from the white library to the black library. She memorized plays, sonnets, and poems by the likes of William Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe, Paul Laurence Dunbar plus so many more. Remembering the literature allowed her to gain a new language and way of speaking. Once she decided to talk, she did very boldly and profoundly. Maya's creative strategies lied within her embracing all the cultures of her creativity. She danced, sang, wrote, etc. She did not limit herself when it came to expression. She also began to walk in her spirit of activism and truth. As a teen, she became the first African American streetcar conductor in San Francisco. Maya was determined to be the best in everything!  Maya married a Greek sailor taking on the name Angelou, but the marriage was short-lived. She gave birth to a son, and that began another trek of her journey. Maya ventured into dance to help support her and her young son Guy. She embraced her creativity in dance, song, and poetry. They were all the loves of her life. She realized that there were so many ways to express and get her point across.

Maya had always been a creative being with an original mind. Her emotional pitfalls seemed few and far in between. As she joined the writer's guild in New York in 1959, she was able to gain greater exposure and connections which allowed her access to the civil rights movement. It seems that Maya lived with the awareness of Grandiosity, Dependency, Complacency, Conservatism, Impatience, and Inflexibility (Greene, 2012, Mastery). However, none of those characteristics were a threat to her success. Like Coltrane, Maya had an authentic voice which was cultivated for years as she read the works of others. It gave birth to the expression of her own words and actions written and performed. Her and Coltrane shared the commonality of studying others and gaining a new language from that in-depth education.  In their years of intense apprenticeship, they both emerged with a more authentic sound, and their uniqueness had come alive (Greene, 2012, Mastery).

Maya's life experiences often thrust her into positions of power. When Maya fell in love with a South African activist, Vusumzi Make they moved to Cairo, Egypt but soon separated after that. She then relocated to Ghana where she became an editor for an English weekly. She worked as a journalist for a time and made a connection with Malcolm X while there. After four years she returned to America to work with Malcolm, and two days later he was killed (Augustine, 2016). After being devastated by Malcolm's death, she returned to singing where she began to pour out her soul through song. Again, another example of Maya using a creative avenue to express her emotions.
Unlike Coltrane, Maya was able to spread her creativity throughout many avenues; Dancing, Singing, Poetry, Literature. Coltrane's ability to concentrate solely on the understanding of the music and conveying it into a sound of his own using the same elements (instruments) is entirely different from Maya incorporating her craft into song, dance, poetry, (Maya Angelou, 2001, Biography).
Maya Angelou continued on her path of greatness and was awarded a plethora of honorable notables, recognized as one of America's finest, and served in many historical moments such as presidential inaugurations.

Her tenacity to be bold and stand for her people even within her expressions of art made her famous. She inspired many and encouraged most. Just her journey of life and quest to be the best in everything she did is enough to motivate any true original mind creative being.
Maya's legacy will live on forever because not only did she hone her craft and become a master; she left a trail for others to follow with a blueprint. Although each of us will have our path to travel, when becoming a master, you will always need a teacher.  When Maya Angelou reached her peak, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of freedom in 2008 by President Obama. What an honor to be acknowledged over many years with so many prestigious recognition. I believe the legacy one leaves behind shows forth of the actual quest they made all along. In essence, when Maya began to reach individuals through her craft, her breakthroughs arrived. From childhood triumphs to social activist moments and official acknowledgments Maya could have never predicted her life would turn out in such a way.

However, she always strived for the best and let nothing deter her, distract her or, discourage her. As the same for Coltrane. He never knew after his death people would look upon him as a legend of Jazz, just as Charlie Parker. At the moment all that mattered was focusing on the craft and perfecting it with creative grace and satisfaction. I believe Maya and Coltrane succeeded in this area and will continue to be legends in their own right with all the notable mentions they deserve.  The secret of becoming a master is allowing the flow of creativity and focus never leave you. It is possible for us all to achieve it.  All of humanity was created to be masters!

Free Flow - Short Story

As I approached the bodega my heart fluttered almost in expectancy of something spectacular and then I saw her. She was beautiful! I felt myself slowing down to catch every glimpse of her being. There she stood, a full figured bodacious ebony sistah. Her amber tresses of locs flowed freely past her shoulders. She walked with a confidence only a queen could display. The scent of black woman oil and patchouli lingered from her essence. Her aura was as bright as her smile. All I could see was the prism of rainbow. As I approached my destination our eyes met and she smiled. I felt the coolness of her vibe and the softness of her flair.

How could I engage with this beautiful soul? I could not afford to let this opportunity go by, or could I? Before I could answer myself I heard a soft settled voice speak. "Hello, how are you?" Did she just speak to me or did my ears deceive me? There is definitely no time for a cat and mouse game so I immediately responded. "Hi, I'm good! How are you?" Before I knew it we were in exchange of conversation that had become pleasant and surreal all within one breathe. Her name, Celeste meaning heavenly, precisely what her presence had purposed to me. I would never forget the moment I laid eyes on her nor the time we spent together in our opening dialogue.

However, the timing of our encounter would soon one day come for sure, for this meeting of bliss had only been in my dreams. I awakened in a cold sweat only to find that my unforgettable encounter had been in another realm of life. Where is she? Has our time come to meet in this life? Is she quickly approaching or would this be like most of my other dreams and fade away after time? No! that could not possibly be our fate. I have come to know her and she knew me in that moment we became one within the universe, an entity worth exploring.

So I picked up my journal that I kept on the nightstand near my bed and begin to write before the memories left my head. Every detail and fragrance, I would leave nothing up to mystery. If I have to write this down over and over until this dream becomes a reality I will. Shall I conjure up the encounter that surely has found me? Of course..... Leaving nothing up to chance I will become the main ingredient in my forthcoming destiny. We will meet, I know it...

Queen Kenya's Korner -Each One Reach One

Greetings,

As this day has evolved greater has manifested. There is so much going on in our world which we call earth. Many are growing spiritually, mentally, emotionally and getting healthier by the day. While others are suffering in poverty and being deprived knowledge and healthy food while lacking productive relationships and avenues to obtain greater for themselves. Health is important, just as important as knowledge. Yet the ability to obtain wealth is a common focus in our society. The wealth rule and keep getting richer while the poor stay poor and diseased. Where has the sense of community gone?

There is no way one man or woman can make it in this life alone. Yet in today's society the average message to individuals is all about Self proclaimed success. The focus on self leads to a life of destruction! The value of life diminishes and the true culture of humanity begins to die. How can WE as a people begin to focus more on US and less on ME and I? We must UNITE and bond. It all begins in our homes and our communities. We must teach our children to LOVE and VALUE life. It begins with Self-Love. The kind of love that is pure and honorable not focused on materialistic gains but on growth and expansion of life. Are you up for the task? Can you begin within your own home with yourself and then spread this model within the household?

As humanity continues to unfold governmental societies continue to push their own agendas leading to a one world order that only benefits its kind. As a people we all can learn to stand against this barbaric culture and infuse love back into our homes and communities. We can begin by eating better, learning more, meditating and exercising. Our focus in this life should be to LIVE out the purpose for which we came here to live. Otherwise we will soon find ourselves quickly dying without our purpose ever being fulfilled. Make a commitment to you and your family today to CHANGE for the better. Consciousness about truth in this world will guide us a long way. There is so much to do and so many to reach. Yet it all begins with YOU! So how about it? Let's not be selfish but learn to be selfless, by giving ourselves the very best so that we may in turn be able to give to others. We must help each other along the way and take back our communities one by one. Each One Reach One!

To Fellow Aspiring Journalist

Aspirations of Journalism
By Queen Kenya

The industry of Journalism and Communications are mostly desired by those who are passionate about it. Over the years this industry has evolved as many do, but with the influx of technology, it has really shifted into a higher gear. Most think of the journalism career as an art or novelty. I won't say that I agree totally, but I am an Author and Artist. Writing is my passion, and it has always been since I was a kid. I have always dreamed of writing the articles people read in the newspaper. Then that turned into writing the articles people read in magazines, to becoming editor and chief of a magazine. The list goes on and on. As an aspiring journalist, I would encourage you to evaluate your true purpose and goals within the industry. Do you want to investigate? Do you want to report? Do you want to write? Do you want to be the voice that the public hears? Are you willing to give the audience what they want and need? What I have learned on my journey to a BA degree in Journalism/Communications is that it truly requires strategic, resourced, academic preparation and production. It can be tedious at times to meet deadlines, put pieces of the puzzles together, interview persons of interest, formulate a great story layout, etc. You have to know that you work for the people primarily. Branding yourself from the beginning may very well be to your advantage. Don't be afraid to connect and showcase your work on social media sites. Start a portfolio, blog, and get social media accounts like Twitter to gain a following.

The bottom line is YOU must be willing, capable, determined and focused to make it all happen. Having an understanding of what the media encompasses puts you ahead of the game. I learned a few things about myself in this journey. One, I don't like academic writing! I am capable of doing it, and I even brushed up on my skills and learned some things to help me along the way. Nevertheless, I don't like it. Two, I love creative writing! Learning specifics about yourself can stir you in the right direction in this field. Three, I don't have to be in front of the camera to make myself known. My voice is strong in my writings; however, I realize I must always stick to the ethics. That means writing the facts, truth, and remain unbiased at all times. I am glad I decided to fulfill my quest for this degree. I feel it taught me the essentials of writing and communications. Now I can pursue my love of creative writing as I continue my education seeking a Master's in Creative Writing/TV Film. I have enough knowledge to start work in the field and by the end of my Master's I will have gained more to veer off in that arena. My goals never changed because I always knew what I wanted to do. I just didn't know the specifics of the industry, and now I have a better understanding. I am so proud of this accomplishment that I have achieved!

To the aspiring journalist, I say if writing makes you happy and satisfies you, pursue it at all costs. Just know that it may not be all glitter and glam. Also, prepare to write tons of long papers in school. Prepare to learn APA style and use it productively. Those are the things I did not like about school, yet it has made me a better journalist in training. As I prepare to take on the world, I say to you never give up, never give in, and always achieve the goal you set. Become the journalist you actually aspire to be, no matter what the people say. Know that you are the one who writes your story of life and only you can change the course. Good Luck!

Politics In America Today

America has been the world's leading nation for many decades. It's government was founded in 1789 establishing the foundation for the land of the free and the home of the brave. However, the strength of the country has been on the backs of its people. America is a great melting pot. It has become a great nation of diversity, yet the truth of hatred and racism still exists within the land.

In recent years the blood of the people is on the hands of law enforcement, and those in the position of power within the justice system, So many injustices have been displayed in violent assaults against unarmed black citizens that many others have become fearful of their country.

In desperation, many look to the White House and the federal government to make a change. Century after century the American government has chosen a leader, one that would lead the country and stand for justice and equality for all. It is astounding how in this season one of the presidential candidates has not even gone through proper protocol of governing to be able to run, yet he is running. Donald Trump has propelled his way forth in this 2016 election by popular influence, wealth, and unethical tactics. It is common for most races to become treacherous yet this one is like no other.

It will be historical and monumental. Hilary Clinton has finally risen as choice Democrat candidate, and Trump remains in position for Republicans. The USA has much work ahead of itself even though President Obama has made great changes in his term. The question is where will America go from here?  Will America remain on top or finally fall? Time will tell.  Election 2016 is near and once again history will be made.

The Art of Writing- My Story

Many often will ask is writing a natural talent, learned trait, or something some people just stumble across? I would have to say its possible to learn to write, but those who do so with passion have a natural talent that cannot be denied. I have been writing for fun as long as I can remember. It all started in grade school when I was required to write essays and short stories.

My peers would often grumble and complain and I found it quite thrilling and entertaining to tackle the tasks at hand. Then I realized there was something different about my desire and passion to write. I begin to express my thoughts in stores and poems. Learning about all the different types of literature was quite appealing. I began to explore words in depth, broadening my vocabulary and expanding my knowledge. I became a Spelling Bee Winner and from there I felt unstoppable. There was no word I could not spell or define.

Even in my adult life I have found it most intriguing to continue to explore words and create pieces of literature that inspire and encourage my audience. My most favorite writing has been article writing. writing entertainment articles about up and coming artist is always a burst of energy to me. One of my favorite movies is Brown Sugar, simply because I can relate to both the main characters but especially with Sydney. Sydney is the Editor of XXL a major entertainment magazine that focuses on the music industry.

I always dreamed of becoming one of those... Until then I write blogs, novel, article, poems etc. I live out loud in all that I do and I attempt to allow my written word to make room for me. So the art of writing comes naturally for me. I am fond of creative writing and I even enjoy public and business writing but my least favorite is research writing (academic). Nonetheless writing has become my favorite pass time and an entry into a new career for me.

I am thankful to have a way with words as I am often told. Yet I am more thankful for the creation that my words become. The Art of Writing cannot be denied and for many it will leave a legacy behind! I already look forward to being in that number.

Creators (Writers) Block... Encouragement for The Soul

In life those who are creative tend to have alot of drama going on in thier lives. This is one of the main ingredients to creating. Art imitates life; this is true and in saying that we must take advantage of the opportunities that lie before us to create within. Some life experiences can really be hurtful while you are going through are even watching others endure but once the storm calms take out that Ipad, laptop, pen and paper and let the magic begin.

I believe it is imperative to create with imagination and emotional imagery. It captivates your audience and gives them an opportunity to relate to the scenario at hand. As time goes by you will experience many situations, take the best from it all. The good, the bad and the ugly! It's been a long time since I wrote a blog because life has been happening and I haven't come back to this place til now. Yet I have much to explore and elaborate on. I will share as much as I feel led to.... Know your purpose in this life and walk in it. I was created to write! Yes and I believe in me and my ability to do so. Never give up on your dreams and passion. No one has the visions that you are given for they are unique and divine.

Know that as time goes by your purpose is revealed and the matters of your heart may be healed from the inside out. You are the projector of your destiny. Walk into each day knowing that you were granted access to succeed! Each breath you take should be your push into progression. Let you inner creativity take you to the next level. You are your greatest supporter, no one will encourage you more than you can encourage yourself. Go for it! There is nothing that can keep you  from your destiny but YOU... So PRESS on my brothers and sister and make room for the Greater that is on the way within you Destiny.
Peace and Blessings,

Sistah Kenya

Keeping the Creative Flow Going...

Often times as writers and intuitive creative beings, there will come a time in your life, when your creative juices will seem to cease. Don't be alarmed it's normal!! I call it writers block. There are many ways to deal with this type of situation.
  1. Ignore the state and explore by continuing to write a little everyday..even if it's just words of thought that don't really have meaning of expression.
  2. Give yourself some time and just take a break from creative writing
  3. Force yourself to write like never before to break through the silent state
These suggestions are only a few that I have done at many different times. The one that I feel works best for me is number 3! 1 and 2 were done at times when I felt I could afford to take breaks or be gentle with my spirit on this matter. 3 came when I knew I was in a funk & had to come out! The only way of doing so was to FIGHT and WRITE by any means necessary. So I wrote of my current life situations, how I felt about it, how others made me feel, how they treated me, how the situation effected me etc.

I made my life experience become the subject of my written word. I used words of thought and affirmations to inspire, encourage, and sometimes even persuade me into doing what I knew I had to do. When you are truly a creative writer within your spirit it's usually what helps you cope, live, maintain, stay alive; by all means. If that be the case you must protect this craft and nurture it at all costs.

I created 2 beautiful novels during times when I felt I had writers block... I created several poems that later in turn encouraged me to press on through my trials in life. I have created several short stories just to keep my mind going and sharp. Somethings I have created may never see the light of day, but that is okay. That just means it was an assignment just for me.

So take some time within your life today to see where you are in your time and space. Are you in a state of writers block? Do you want to come out? Or would you rather just linger in a world of limbo with your words of thought being left in the dark? You choose today.. Your thoughts are relevant in life and someone somewhere is waiting to hear it, read it or even speak it. It is up to you on whether or not they ever get it.
Well there you have it... Today's rendition of Keeping the Creative Flow of Writing Going!!!

A Look into My Second Novel- BREAKTHROUGH

BREAKTHROUGH

Chapter One

Introduction: Shakira Jones

It’s been three years since the grand opening of Karamel City. One of ATL’s finest club and strip joints owned by me and my hubby. Kenneth and I ventured into this strip club lounge business with intentions of making it a lifetime investment. Well he’s still head over heels about keeping his hand in the cookie jar so to speak, but I would rather we let it go completely.

I mean we already have some responsible brothers running it for us. So why not sell it? We have saved enough money over the past three years to start another business of some sort.  Since I have been making good money dancing at the Atlanta Performance Theatre I figured we could afford to let Karamel City go.

Don’t get me wrong this was my baby too, but times have changed and I definitely have. God has blessed me so allowing me to grow and spiritually mature. Every since I got saved, accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior and joined my best friend Keyone’s church, things have changed.. I have allowed God to start purging me of all things.  I know I can’t continue to have my hands tied in worldly things.

Yes it is a business but from the spiritual realm it represents so much more. Kenneth seems to be a little more attached than I. I guess because he has been the one spending all his time there. It has become his career and bread winner.

At one time I was the only Headliner at Karamel City! After we got married I decided to stop head lining. Kenneth was surprised; he figured I would strip for life but when God changes you-He changes you! It hasn’t happened over night either. This is a daily ongoing journey that I strive to do everyday. I finally decided to let God lead me even in my career choices. I prayed for better opportunities and they came!

I was blessed with a job as a professional dancer. The theatre takes up much of my time and I am so engulfed with the broad way scene that exotic dancing has become unattractive to me.  I never thought the day would come when I would not want to strip! I knew I couldn’t do it forever. I thought the urge would always be there but since I have begun to allow God to change me it’s not! Kenneth says I make too much of the whole thing. He says that we can live our lives and be blessed by God and still have our business…

Writing Poetry

INTRODUCTION:
When I was in grade school English and Language Arts were my favorite subjects!!
I was very intrigued by the creativity that lied within the vocabulary words I learned.
Spelling was my favorite subject and writing stories and essays were second nature to me.
Now that you know that about me perhaps that will give you some insight on the reason I
believe writing poetry is quite simple.

There are many different variations of poems. Some rhyme, tell stories, or are very abstract!
Here are a few types:

  • Acrostic
  • Cinquain
  • Concrete
  • Limerick
  • Haiku
In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word. The word often is the subject of the poem.

Example:

Kindhearted and Loving
Encouraging  others always
Natural in every aspect of the way
Youthful at heart
Ambitous and motivated

Cinquain poems are five lines long with a certain number of syllables or words in each. Cinquain poems do not rhyme. There are many ways to write cinquain poems. Concrete poems form a picture of the topic or follows the contour of a shape that is suggested by the topic. A Limerick is a funny little poem containing five lines. The last words of the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other (A) and the last words of the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other so the pattern is AABBA. It should also have a rhythm pattern, like da DUM da da DUM da da DUM for the first, second, and fifth lines (A)and da da DUM da da DUM for the third and fourth lines.

Honestly I believe I use a combination of all of these when writing. Ironic isn't it? I start off one way and end another. I'm not really good at writing short poems but I will try to demonstrate one for you...

I am a black butterfly
In the morning when I arise
Black butterfly that's me

HAIKU

Writing poetry is as simple as the creator allows it to be.. If it come easy and naturally for you as it does for me then you will catch on . Otherwise it will be more of a task . Writing in general can be a favorite past time. So if you haven't tried it maybe you should.

Well there you have it, another Blog entry in the Writers Knook!!

Is Blogging Important for the writer?

Most often many think of blogging a s a self promotional tool that only aspires to promote the creator and its products. Well I am one who will definitely say there is more to blogging than just that. I look at blogging as the gateway into the new millennial writing industry. Allowing yourself to get connected to others and have those connected to you in a more personable way such as blogging affords you experience, insight, and constructive criticism.

The catch to blogging is to connect with other social media links so that your blog might be promoted, talked about and then sought after. It all begins somewhere and why not have that some where be your blog!? When you tweet about your blog or post blog features on social media sites such as Facebook and Myspace, it offers you an avenue to reach out to many.

I have found that creating blogs for specific genres and subjects according to your audience may be necessary. I have my own personal blog where I just write and vent on topics that I enjoy. Then there is my spiritual blog where I offer inspirational encouragement for life situations. Lastly, I have created this blog that offers words of wisdom and advice on writing and everything that has to do with writing.

I believe Blogging is the best thing that could have been created for the writer. Every now and again you might come across something that just stands out. An article that speaks to your mind, body and soul. For me more often than not that information has been captured in blogs and blog forums. Therefore I say blogging is very important to the writer and can very well be considered a writers best friend. When you make deadlines for yourself, such as limited time and 500 count word products you can very well enhance your writing skills.  Writing a blog provides you the material to write a book. If you have written a blog for at least six months consistently then you have written a book!

So as I write this blog to you on a subject I hold near and dear to my heart;Writing. I encourage you to consider your purpose for writing, your audience, and your quest as you move forward. If you don't have a blog Create One and then begin to write and share.

**Looking forward to being invited to read your blogs.**

Erotica-Pieces

One may ask how do you begin to write an erotica prose? As I have said before, I just begin to WRITE!!
Although I know that imagination plays a huge role in this category. Unless you have experienced much in the sexual arena. You must draw from an inner place of fantasy and sexual desire. So I will share with you one of my prose that I am proud of yet intrigued by. It is entitled:

Closer

In the night my eyes are drawn to you. The moonlight illuminates your skin and your very essence calls out to me.. I feel you in the distance so I approach you gently. My heart leaps out to yours so I calm it by walking towards you.. Our hands meet and then the game of caressing begins. Your soft yet manish skin has me on a natural high...

Chocolate brown, mocha born; it drives me wild. Just to be in you presence, hmmm my heart sings. As you run your fingers through my hair I relax my head and let my neck go to the rhythm of your flow. I sigh with great relief knowing that I am in good hands. So I move in a little closer and kiss your lips. The electricity  of our kiss sparks up the flame in my loins. As your tongue tangoes with mine I grab hold to your chest sampling every hair with my fingertips. Your muscles tense up and then release as your chest is filled with the fire and desire.

I gaze into your eyes once more to capture the moment.. Finally you pick me up and carry me to the loft. As I lay I begin to picture you inside of me. The thought excites me. So I moan with the sexiest groan ever.. Instead of speaking you simply guide your fingers from my lips to my breast. My nipples become erect and the touch of you excites me more.. One kiss from you will make me explode. So as I think it, this is just what you do. Kissing me on every inch of my body not missing a spot, head to toe, starting with my forehead the frontal lobe, love of all being..

Ending with my soft and precious feet, what a treat! Toe by toe you caress me with your firm and exotic tongue. I never knew being intimate with you could be so much fun. So as I aim to show you my pleasure I grab your man handle and shift it in my direction. Caressing this joystick has become much fun.. your heavy panting lets me know you approve. So as I take this ride to the next level, now you lay and I drive. The moon still gleaming bright in the night.

The air has become hot and steamy filled with the aroma of pure ecstasy. Its just you and me here and nothing but our love which guides us to ultimate places. So the journey continues and as the climax is obtained you scream out my name! Yes I love to hear you call out to me, especially when we are one... And  now the night has just begun, You and me journey into the avenue of CLOSER..  As our hearts subside from traveling out of time we both are relieved to know this love right here shall never die..

Black Butterfly Emerged-A Piece of Chapter 1

Chapter One
Introduction Keyone Johnson

It was a hot and sticky night in ATL. The air was thick and humid, unusual for this time of year. I like to have a drink on my balcony to unwind every now and again, catch the sunset over the city, so I did. It’s April now summer is just around the corner. I have been residing in Atlanta for about six years now. I didn't plan on staying that long it just happened that way. After graduating from college I decided to give the city life a chance. I’m renting a loft downtown on Peachtree Street. It is the happening spot so I wanted to always have easy access to the night life. It was the least I could do after living in the dorms of a faraway college for so long. I attended a small college in Riverdale, Georgia.

I have BA in business with a minor in Communications. My life is okay I guess, but I long for so much more at times. I have a great job as a business consultant for a major local newspaper called ATL VENUE. It focuses on the up and coming lives of entertainers in the metro area in all areas of art; as well as restaurants, nightclubs, street festivals, and theatre attractions. I am a liaison for a number of sponsors giving them necessary information, getting that back to the paper which then informs the community of the haps. There's more to it but that's the gist of it.

My best friend Monet says I have a great life without kids and a husband to tend to but I totally disagree. Anyway what does she know? She would give anything to be in my shoes at the moment, single and free. Monet and I have traveled the same path together ever since second grade. We always attended the same schools and college. She majored in Nursing but ended up moving back home to our lil country town in Texas.

She is now married with two kids, a girl and a boy. Her marriage and life seems perfect while my life seems to be a mess. They say the grass always looks greener on the other side and from where I'm sitting, that turf’s mean green. The humid air brushed up against my face more now that the hour had grown later. I have been home for about two hours. I am contemplating if I want company or not? Tonight I guess I will opt no. It’s the middle of the week, Wednesday, I can hold out two more nights.

So I decided to call my best friend to see how she was doing. It was about nine o'clock there so she shouldn't be too busy. I dialed the number and the phone must have rang about four times before she answered hurriedly,

'Hello!' “Hey girl what’s up with you?”, I implied. Monet was never really too busy but tonight seemed different.

'Girl I just got in the door, Alvin had a baseball game tonight so we just getting in. Let me get things situated and feed the kids, I'll call you back in a lil while okay!'

Sure I replied sarcastically, thinking she wouldn't get back to me tonight. Alvin is her son and she had him in damn near every sport. This season it was baseball, next season football, poor child, he will be worn out. Monet insisted that this was the making of a great superstar athlete taking care of momma.

I chuckled at the thought. I would love to have a son to take care of me, better yet a Man. Here I am 25 years old, single successful, no kids and no man. All I did have was allot of drama and boredom. My friend Shakira says I just don't know how to make the best of my life. She lives three floors down from me. I live on the tenth floor. Did I mention the view was wonderful in my sky rise loft? Shakira was not only my friend, but she was the best and might I add a freak! She has all these crazy ideas about how life is supposed to be lived as a single black woman. I tried to understand her views but she has always lost me. I decided to call her and see if she wasn't too busy to keep a sistah company.

I dialed the number and the phone rang once and her voice mail picked up! “You have reached Shakira, Obviously I am entertaining so leave a message, I'll holla back!”

This girl is a trip. She has a day time message and an evening one. This was the evening one. I had struck out once again with the girlfriends. Shakira was getting her groove on definitely she had a dude for every day of the week! Surely I would get there again soon enough. She had learned these tricks from me. I had put them down for a minute in order to seek true love again, which I have yet to find. I guess it will come in time. That's what momma always says.

My choices of entertainment were getting quite slim. So I decided to finish my wine and take a nice hot bubble bath. I ran some water in my garden tub surrounded by lavender scented candle lights. The decor in my bathroom is light lavender, a rendition of my favorite color purple. That was the only reason for the lavender candles they matched. I am a real neat freak! Everything must be just right all the time. When it’s not then you know something is wrong with me. I took my shoes off and headed for my dresser. I pulled out one of my silk nighties an ex had brought for me. I tend to reminisce on my previous rendezvous to help me get through my present state. It’s soft and scented with oil I loved to wear, Black Woman. Another remnant an ex-lover had gotten me hooked to. It screamed my name!

I loaded my CD player with some relaxing music a little Sade, Kem, Erykah Badu and Outkast. Of course the first track to play was Prototype by Dre. I had it on repeat for a minute until I could get to my bath. I undressed and slipped into the tub. The steam in my lavender bath filled the room. The aroma filled the air.

I soaked in the tub as Dre told me how much he thought I was the prototype! Of course I knew this, I just wish he did! I was almost in a deep trance when my phone rang! Who could this be? It had to be after eleven by now and whoever it was must know I had to be to work in the morning for eight! I jumped up anticipating a great convo, and it was some fool with the wrong number. He had the nerve to try and get at me. As lonely as I was I started to entertain him, but then I thought of all the psychos in the city and quickly changed my mind.

I was desperate but not to that extent. I hung up the phone and continued to soak. Listening to Sade made things worse. I quickly bathed, got out the tub, and got into bed. I said my prayers, always praying for the man of my dreams, and then I fell asleep. I tossed and turned all night as I thought tomorrow has to be a better day.

I guess if I had gotten a good feel the night before I'd be alright. I was so frustrated sitting in my ride on I-75. Most people had to deal with the traffic getting downtown, but my journey everyday was on the other side of the perimeter in Roswell. My office was out there away from the average hustle and bustle of an Atlanta corporation. When I got to work I was pissed. I had been cut off by two idiots and damn near rammed into from behind. This is going to be a great Thursday I thought sarcastically. I parked my car in my assigned spot B12, gathered my things and headed towards the elevator. Lenny was waiting for me as usual. Every morning the security guard would woo me into the office.

'Good Morning, Keyone! How's it going?'

“Great”, I replied lying through my teeth, but I was not about to fill rentacop in on how my life was really falling apart. Although he probably thought he had every right to know, being that we had this work relationship for the past two years. We would speak and have small talk every now and again. Lenny was a fine brother though, tall, about 6'1 approximately 260 lbs. not too thick and not too small. A dark chocolate brother just like I liked them. He even groomed his self nicely. Low hair cut and nice goatee. I must admit the brother had it going on. He always reeked of Drakar though, that was a turn off to me.

Drakar is cologne that my grandma’s ex-boyfriend used to wear years ago. A brother his age should have more taste and be up to date with his choice of cologne. I just smiled and sashayed by him as always. Thinking how I would love to do him! Of course that would never happen. I mean what would people think of me? All I would do is fantasize about that one. Besides we worked in the same building.

To me that would be like dating a guy who goes to the same high school as you. Everyone is bound to be all in your kool-aid. I entered the elevator and before I could press the button for the fifth floor my cell was ringing. It was Shakira, dying to tell me about her night I presume. I answered, “What's up chic? Talk fast I'm on my way into the office.”

She responded, ‘Girl wait til I tell you about last night, this is definitely a face to face convo. Call me when you get off work and I'll come by before I go to the spot.'

“Alright, peace”, was my reply. I really had no intention on seeing Shakira. I had a lot of haterade in my system right now so it probably wouldn't be good for our relationship, but she wouldn't care anyways. That's just how she was. The spot is her place of employment. That was the codename we had given it. Shakira is an exotic dancer, or should I say a stripper at Hot Ecstasy. She preferred to be labeled as an exotic dancer and that's what she was.

Work was going quite well today! I got two major deals for an AIDS foundation that has a summit and testing fair coming in June. I also have two interviews with directors of local major nonprofit organizations. They are giving me some insight on what they have to offer the community. A little splurge piece my boss had offered me to test my writing skills. I handle business related issues mainly, but my love is writing.

I want to advance to that level if Mr. Byron Cane will let me, he's my boss. He hired me two years ago straight out of college. I've been elevating ever since.

Most people have an awkward relationship with their boss especially when they’re the opposite sex, but Byron and I had gotten beyond those issues. He’s been married twenty years strong and has three kids. Two sons and a daughter and as luck would have it, he says I remind him of his baby girl. I figure however I can score brownie points with the big guy let the chips fall where they may. I adore Byron! He is a great black man in his own right.

Achieved status by mere accomplishments of hard work and dedication. He has to be between the ages of forty-seven and fifty-one. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but he is a brilliant entrepreneur. He has his own company and employs a lot of his own kind from top to bottom. There is nothing like a black man with money and power. His wife is one lucky lady. One day, I too will have a man of his stature or even greater on my arm.

How Does One Begin to Write a Novel?

I have written 2 and a half novels thus far.. The first step is just to start writing!! I know that may seem a bit redundant but it's simply truth. Most writers hold so much creativity within; trying to organize it might become a catastrophe! So let me give you an order of thoughts..

  1. Just start writing-Know Your Audience
  2. Choose Main Characters, Plot, Location
  3. Contemplate Purpose and Moral of story
  4. Gauge the number of pages and chapters you want your book to have
  5. Begin a draft and be prepared to comb through at a later date
  6. Take your time (especially for you 1st project) You want it to be Good not Rushed
  7. Edit, Edit and re-edit (Comb thru every chapter as you go)
  8. When you have completed the book and your edits have someone else edit it
  9. Promote, Self Publish, or Find a Publishing Company that will support your dreams & Goals
  10. Sell Online... Network and Promote
I know this may not be an official professional list on How To... But take it from a Self-Published Author with 2 and half novels under her belt, (lol). I hope this short list helps you to begin your master piece. Look for a display of my work soon to come. I will present a portion of Chapter One of my 1st Novel Black Butterfly Emerged! Good Luck and may the force of Creativity be with you on your journey to success.

Sincerely,

SistahKenya

Example of a Short Story (In Short Version for the Blog)

Autumn in Twilight Reflection

Moments of reflection are often intriguing especially those in nostalgia modes. De Ja Vu! The wind blew and hit my face with a brisk cool breeze. My hair  was lifted with charismatic charm as I sat in the warmth of the sun. I felt as though I was in the presence of the one I had longed for all too long. My cousin who had passed away only three years ago today.

The leaves on the trees were a bright orange and crimson red. These tones always gave me comfort yet brought me to a place of wanting more. What is this feeling? I would often ask myself as these moments would appear. A daydreamer is what I was often labeled. A drifting spirit without a home. Who me? No, I like to think of it as being free. Free to allow my mind and spirit to venture to the places of unknown that most people are afraid to go.

"Keoshe! you day dreaming again.. come on we gotta make it to the park before it gets crowded!"

I could hear my cousin yelling at me as he approached my truck. Asad was always cheerful and ready for a good time. He had truly began to teach me the meaning of living in the moment.

'Asad, don't yell at me, you know I like to drift. Dang you just ruined the perfect dream.'

"Keoshe, was I in this daydream of yours?"

'No!'

"Then it was far from being perfect. Come on here girl lets ride."

I loved the way my cousin would put things into perspective for me, from his point of view. At this point in our lives Asad and I were inseparable and no one could come in between us. We are like the brother and sister version of Bonnie and Clyde. Trust you don't want to cross us.

As I drove up the highway we talked about the events of the day that lied ahead at the city park we often ventured to. This was his favorite spot to hang out, Pleasant Park. There's a Wine Arts festival in town and we weren't gonna miss this one for nothing. Asad always knew how to make me smile. So he inserted the latest Erykah Badu cd into the player and we both sighed as we heard the melodious sounds of Worldwide Underground Puff...

Living in the outskirts of the city had done us some justice. We always had somewhere to go within the city limits. Whether we were alone just the two of us or traveling as a family, me him and my two daughters. We always made the best of it. Never in our young lives did we truly focus on the journey of life; it's time constraints or short endings. Every moment was lived to the fullest and by all means enjoyed. Yes there were hard times and bad, but none over shadowed those that was spent in the pure essence of US! We had become a dynamic duo that was left unsung abruptly when the grim reaper showed his face. Twenty four years young with so much more life of promise my cousin Asad Passed a way due to a massive heart attack. This left me in a place of shock and awe. Yet I had discovered that he truly had given me more of a reason to live now, than ever before. All that lay ahead of me he had already sowed pearls of wisdom.

Asad had traveled the world and back thanks to his talent and gift of music ministry. Yes he was a musician at heart and that is the path of life he chose. A giver of his soul and cheerful always. He would often say to me:

"Keoshe God has so much in store for you. It is up to you to allow it to manifest. You choose!"

I can hear him now clear as the day is before me. The sun shining bright warming my face and the smell of burning kush oil in the air. This reflection has become my atmosphere. Asad never hid his feelings and in that, was much like me. Meaning he spoke what he felt and told truth whether you wanted to hear it or not, but He was always tactful. The amazing thing about Asad, by the time he finished telling you what he thought good or bad he always left you with a smile. And today as I reflect in the Twilight of this Autumn day I am enticed to recall all the monumental moments we shared. This essence of nostalgia has not come for no extraordinary reason, but simply to remind me of him.

His spirit lives on and yet the message that his life portrayed. Live, Laugh, Love and in all things keep God first. Yes that is what my favorite cousin taught me. Today I receive it all and believe that this is only my beginning inspired journey. De Ja Vu has become my reality and yet I live in the now. Being Free and Being me. Keoshe Mitchell is on her journey to Soaring as a Free Spirit starting now...

**This short Story was Inspired by the relationship of my Cousin Ashton J. Bridges RIP  March 16, 1984 - November 24, 2008**

Creating a Short Story

The first thing to do is gather your Ideas, purpose, prose, and intent of completion. I usually create Short Stories just for the fun of it. Entertainment is a great reason to write, especially since there are so many topics and genres of interest. My favorite is romance of course. I have had the opportunity to be intrigued by the writings of the Author ZANE. She created the perfect short stories in her edition of Sex Chronicles.

Once you have your topic of choice, setting, plot, and characters you can begin your journey. Remember the key is to be short yet innovative. Although short stories aren't long as novels they should still provide the same value of artistry and passion required when writing novels. You want to leave the audience wanting more therefore providing you an opportunity to create more short stories. Your story should be very precise and creative. I am a writer who loves to paint pictures with my words for my reader. If you allow the scene to be vivid it gives the reader an opportunity to interact with the story at hand. In my next blog I will demonstrate my artistry in short story form. Blog title will be: #ShortStoryExample

This will simply be a template for you to examine and filter through into your own style of choice. It is often stated that  when writing short stories it is vitally important that your first and last lines are bangers! I deem that true as well. You must be able to capture the attention of the audience and then fulfill the desired quest of completion as you finish your story. Every line should build character or advance the action. Remember to keep your characters to a minimum; too many may cause conflict. Also be sure to have one focus; limiting your time frame to keep your story SHORT.

There are many ways to write a short story but this is just a tidbit of info to get you started. Be sure to look for the next blog with an example given. Writing is a craft that is honed and practice makes perfect. Great Novelist began with Short Story writings. So try it today, you never know you just might like it.
