Writing Poetry

INTRODUCTION:
When I was in grade school English and Language Arts were my favorite subjects!!
I was very intrigued by the creativity that lied within the vocabulary words I learned.
Spelling was my favorite subject and writing stories and essays were second nature to me.
Now that you know that about me perhaps that will give you some insight on the reason I
believe writing poetry is quite simple.

There are many different variations of poems. Some rhyme, tell stories, or are very abstract!
Here are a few types:

  • Acrostic
  • Cinquain
  • Concrete
  • Limerick
  • Haiku
In Acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are aligned vertically to form a word. The word often is the subject of the poem.

Example:

Kindhearted and Loving
Encouraging  others always
Natural in every aspect of the way
Youthful at heart
Ambitous and motivated

Cinquain poems are five lines long with a certain number of syllables or words in each. Cinquain poems do not rhyme. There are many ways to write cinquain poems. Concrete poems form a picture of the topic or follows the contour of a shape that is suggested by the topic. A Limerick is a funny little poem containing five lines. The last words of the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other (A) and the last words of the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other so the pattern is AABBA. It should also have a rhythm pattern, like da DUM da da DUM da da DUM for the first, second, and fifth lines (A)and da da DUM da da DUM for the third and fourth lines.

Honestly I believe I use a combination of all of these when writing. Ironic isn't it? I start off one way and end another. I'm not really good at writing short poems but I will try to demonstrate one for you...

I am a black butterfly
In the morning when I arise
Black butterfly that's me

HAIKU

Writing poetry is as simple as the creator allows it to be.. If it come easy and naturally for you as it does for me then you will catch on . Otherwise it will be more of a task . Writing in general can be a favorite past time. So if you haven't tried it maybe you should.

Well there you have it, another Blog entry in the Writers Knook!!
